Bounding character values of finite groups

Finite-dimensional complex representations of finite groups are determined (up to equivalence) by their characters, i.e. traces of group elements acting on the representation space. In spite of substantial knowledge available on complex representations of finite simple groups, obtaining good upper bounds on absolute values of these traces is still a very difficult problem. We first describe some applications, assuming good upper bounds on character values of finite simple groups. Then we will discuss recent results that produce such character bounds
