Duality, Loop Models and Applications

During the past decade there has been a resurgence of interest in duality mappings in qunatum systems in 2+1 dimensions and in classical systems in three dimensions. In the condensed matter physics community this interest stems for the need to understand novel quantum critical points and puzzles posed by the compressible regimes of electron fluids proximate to fractional quantum Hall states. For different reasons the same dualities have attracted interest in qunatum field theories in 2+1 dimensions but the dualities are the same. In this talk I will describe a framework for understanding the dualities in terms of models of loop gases. I will discuss the implications of these dualities to the long mystery of the apparent self duality fractional quantum Hall fluids in their compressible regime.
