From Principles to Practice: Translating Effective Teaching Practices for Undergraduate STEM into Course Assignments

This interactive seminar will focus on translating principles to practice. The first part of the seminar will introduce the Principles for Equitable and Effective Teaching of Undergraduate STEM Education included in the 2025 Transforming Undergraduate STEM Education: Supporting Equitable and Effective Teaching report prepared by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. These principles are based on extensive education research across STEM disciplines. The recommendations will be supplemented with specific examples of how these principles can be integrated into course assignments and teaching. The seminar will conclude with a discussion of integrating these principles into the attendees’ existing course assignments and teaching. It is advised that attendees come with a specific course assignment in mind that they would like to revise or improve as this will greatly enhance our discussion.
Attendee Preparation:
Attendees are asked to bring a current course assignment (this could be an in-class assignment or project) that they wish to revise/improve and the directions they provide to students.
Bio:
Nina is an Assistant Professor at Montclair State University. Her research mainly focuses on teacher noticing in technology-mediated learning environments, assessing future teachers’ preparedness to teach mathematics with technology, developing future mathematics teachers’ technological pedagogical content knowledge, statistics education, and critical statistical literacy habits of mind. As a mathematics teacher educator and former high school mathematics teacher, Nina is committed to providing students with classroom experiences that pique and nurture their curiosity, position students as capable doers of mathematics, provide opportunities for productive struggle, emphasize mathematical discourse, and enable conceptual exploration of mathematical content.
