 mily: Calibri, sans-serif; margin: 0px;">Abstract: The Witten genus is the 
 elliptic analogue of the hat A-genus in index theory. It refines the Dirac 
 index to a modular form which is naturally defined on string manifolds. We 
 review its geometric construction, explain the role of anomaly cancellation
  in achieving modularity, and discuss some open problems.</span></p>
