Title: Abstract: Free resolutions extend the idea of specifying an abelian group by generators and relations. They were used by David Hilbert to help count the invariants of a group action, and in the last 60 years their properties have been intensively explored in contexts including group cohomology, combinatorics and projective geometry.
I'll survey some of the motivation, history and successes of this exploration, including some modern conjectures from my current work with Hai Long Dao.
