Abstract: The data processing inequality says that the standard quantum relative entropy is monotone decreasing under the application of an quantum operation; i.e., trace preserving completely positive map. It is one of the many equivalent forms of the strong subadditivity of quantum entropy, and is a prototypical monotonicity inequality. In this talk I will present an approach to proving  such inequalities based on duality, and in particular, Legendre transforms, that yields new results as well as simple proofs of some known results. This is in part recent joint work with Alexander Mueller-Hermes and Haonan Zhang
