Colloquium, Wednesday, November 16, 3:30 - 4:30 pm

Abstract: In this talk I will address the comprehension of proofs that we read in mathematics. Specifically, I will describe work we have conducted over the last 10 years to address what it means to understand a mathematical proof, how we can create questions to assess an undergraduate student’s comprehension of a proof they have read, and how we can create valid and reliable tests to measure mathematics undergraduate students’ proof comprehension more widely. I will describe high-level aspects of this work to leave time to discuss how we can use these assessments in our undergraduate mathematics courses and programs.
