On the Theory of p-adic Manifolds

Location:  Via zoom
Date & time: Wednesday, 04 November 2020 at 1:30PM - 2:00PM

Abstract: While smooth manifolds are typically studied over the real or complex numbers, one can define a smooth manifold over the field of p-adic numbers in much the same way. In this talk I will introduce p-adic numbers, explore some of their basic properties, and construct manifolds from them. Many properties enjoyed by classical manifolds hold in the p-adic setting. Up to one conjecture, p-adic manifolds can be completely classified. Only basic familiarity with the rational numbers will be assumed (this is, of course, a joke, but this talk aims to be accessible).
