Mass, capacity, and volume in general relativity

ABSTRACT: The standard formula for the total or "ADM" mass of asymptotically flat manifolds in general relativity is based on the boundary term at infinity that arises from integrating the scalar curvature. We present an alternative approach to the definition of mass based on the behavior of sets that minimize capacity for a given large volume that is inspired by G. Huisken's isoperimetric mass. Indication will be given that the capacity-volume approach has some advantages when considering low regularity convergence.
