Abstract: I will discuss a surprising correspondence between symmetric probability measures with infinite support on [-1,1] and random walks on the non-negative integers. The correspondence makes use of orthogonal polynomials and their recurrence relations. One can determine whether a random walk is recurrent or positive recurrent from knowing its corresponding measure. Time permitting, I will briefly discuss the analogous theory for probability measures supported on the unit circle and certain random walks on the non-negative integers given by CMV matrices.
