Abstract: | A paper by RH Bing in 1958 asked which 3-manifolds arise from a certain process explained in the paper, and that an answer to this question might solve the Poincare conjecture. Now this process didn't solve the Poincare conjecture, but I can still talk about it. I will introduce 3-manifolds and a process known as Dehn surgery (unrelated to Ricci flow with surgery). Along the way, connections to surfaces (mapping class groups) and 4-manifolds show up. |
