Abstract:  I will discuss the rigorous solution of the Schrodinger equation describing electron emission from metals subjected to a time-periodic laser field. The potential is time dependent, unbounded and discontinuous,  and the spectral theory of such operators had to be developed in the process. Starting with an initial state in which the electrons are confined to the metal we constructed the solution in a form which is rapidly convergent, and asymptotically converges to a periodic generalized eigenfunction of the Floquet operator.
