Arrows of Time without a Past Hypothesis

Dustin Lazarovici - Rutgers University

Location:  Hill 703
Date & time: Wednesday, 08 May 2019 at 11:00AM - 12:20PM

Abstract: The talk will discuss recent attempts by Sean Carroll and Julian Barbour to account for the thermodynamic arrow of time in our universe without a Past Hypothesis, i.e., the assumption of a special (low-entropy) initial state. In this context, I will also propose the definition of a Boltzmann entropy for a classical gravitating system and argue that it may provide a relevant example of a "Carroll universe".
