WIP Seminar

A minimizer for a Thomas-Fermi energy functional - second part

PARKER HUND, Rutgers University

Location:  Hill 703
Date & time: Wednesday, 17 April 2019 at 11:00AM - 12:20PM

Abstract: I will prove the existence of a minimizer of an energy functional which is an approximation to Thomas-Fermi energy functional for a single species of non-relativistic fermions with only Newtonian gravitational interactions. I will also show how minimizers to this functional and similar functionals can be related to the Lane-Emden equation which originated in the study of "gas balls". In this approximate case, the minimizer and corresponding Lane-Emden equation can be solved for in terms of elementary functions.
