Fantastic identities, and where to find them
Matthew Russell (Rutgers University)
Location: Hill 425
Date & time: Wednesday, 05 December 2018 at 7:00PM - 8:00PM
Abstract: In this talk, I will present an overview of integer partition identities from Euler (in the 1700s) to Ramanujan (in the early 1900s) to mathematicians working in 2018. I'll also discuss how computers can be used to systematically conjecture new identities (some of which are still open). This talk will be very accessible (no background beyond Calculus 2 will be assumed), as part of the beauty of partition identities is their simplicity. However, by the end of the hour, we'll be talking about research being published this year.
