Abstract:  While both hyperbolic geometry and Floer homology have both been tremendously successful tools when studying three-dimensional topology, their relationship is still very mysterious. In this talk, we provide sufficient conditions for a hyperbolic rational homology sphere not to admit irreducible solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations in terms of its volume and the length spectrum (i.e. the set of lengths of closed geodesics). We discus explicit examples in which this criterion can be applied.
