Introduction to Adjunctions

Dodam Ih - Rutgers University

Location:  GSL
Date & time: Friday, 19 October 2018 at 1:40PM - 2:40PM

Abstract: Adjoint functors arise naturally in many areas of mathematics, and represent a powerful generalisation of the notion of equivalence that captures asymmetry. In this talk, I will briefly review the basics of category theory, discuss two equivalent definitions of adjunctions, and some basic properties. Saunders Mac Lane famously claimed that "The slogan is 'adjoint functors are everywhere'"; in this spirit, we will consider many examples of adjoint functors from set theory, topology, analysis, algebra, as well as category theory itself, and see how many known results that "feel the same" are actually subsumed by and unified through the language of adjunctions.
