Abstract:  The Antonov stability estimate is a key tool for all proofs of stability of static galaxies, since it yields a lower bound on the `Hessian' corresponding to the linearization. It is a non-standard variational problem to show that a minimizer does exist, and we are going to outline how this can be done.
