Symmetric Threads: Classifying Symmetries in the Fiber Arts

Susan Goldstine, St. Mary's College of Maryland

Location:  Hill GSL
Date & time: Friday, 03 November 2017 at 2:50PM - 3:50PM

Abstract:  Most decorative patterns in knitting, embroidery, weaving, and other fiber arts employ symmetry. For the mathematically inclined, this naturally leads to algebraic questions.  What symmetry groups appear in given art forms?  What symmetry types are possible?  How much design freedom does each symmetry type allow?

In this talk, we will explore plane symmetry groups and their applications to traditional and contemporary fiber arts.  We will begin with a brief introduction to plane isometries, wallpaper groups, and frieze groups, so no specialized algebra background is needed.  In fact, since the talk is stuffed with pretty pictures and real live pieces of fiber art, it is also suitable for non-mathematical people who simply enjoy seeing handmade art.
