Abstract:  In 2013, Arkani-Hamed and Trnka discovered that the physics of particle interactions for a certain quantum theory could surprisingly be encoded in the geometry of a higher dimensional "gem-like" object. Though understanding precisely the connection to physics requires a lot of machinery, the amplituhedron is an interesting geometrical object in its own respect, and its geometry can be explored without any physics background! Starting with convex polygons in the plane, we will build up through a series of examples of increasing sophistication to the definition of the amplituhedron. Time permitting, I will spend the last 5 to 10 minutes giving a bird'e eye view of the relation to physics which involves interesting combinatorics (including planar graphs and recursions!).
