01:640:292 - Honors Calculus IV

Catalog Description

Honors Calculus III,IV (4,4) Covers the same material as 01:640:251 and 252 in a more thorough and demanding fashion. Prerequisites: 01:640:191-192 or permission of department.Prerequisites for 292: 01:640:291 and 01:640:250, or permission of the department. Students who wish to take Math 250 simultaneously with Math 292 should consult the Head Advisor and request a prerequisite override.

Students may not receive credit for more than one of the fourth-semester courses 01:640:244, 252, or 292.
Grades of B or better are required to continue in the honors sequence.

This catalog description is slightly misleading and will be revised: the material covered in 292 will correspond to the material in Math 244 but may include some material associated with 252, or other material. Consult the instructor.

252 vs. 292

Math 252 is the fourth semester of calculus, following after multivariable calculus in the sequence begun with Math 151-152,251. The subject is differential equations and after using one textbook for three terms, the fourth term has a different text.

Math 292 is deliberately intended as a course in honors mathematics for students whose primary interest in the course is the mathematics it contains. The textbook will normally be the one used in Math 244 though it may be supplemented by other material at the instructor's discretion. Theorems may be proved in class and required on examinations.

The course makes use of linear algebra, which is covered in Mathematics 250.


The “normal” prerequisites for Math 292 are Math 191-192 and 291, with 250. Applications for admission by special permission are available at the undergraduate office (green form). Students who have taken 251 H1 or a regular section of 251 with outstanding results are welcome to apply during registration period. Late applications will be considered as long as spaces are available.
