RICHARD PORTER'S
Teaching Philosophy
I try to know my audience so I can give them what they need in a way that keeps them interested in more. When I teach prerequisit courses, I cover material I think is most needed in subsequent classes. When I teach terminal courses, I hope the students leave with a positive impression of math and a basic ability to function in society. Academia is a great place, but some of the most valuable learnig experiences I have had were outside school. Working in industry and owning my own business gave me insight to see some of the many uses of mathematics in the "Real World." Teaching relevant material is a real plus. The biggest lesson I learned working outside of school was that a person must do what they enjoy doing. I teach because I enjoy it. If I were able to do something but teaching, I am sure I would enjoy that too. I hope that my students will enjoy their studies and persue a fruitful career in something that they find as facinating as I find teaching.
