Abstract: I will introduce the group matrix corresponding to a finite group G. This is a matrix in commuting variables, and its determinant lies at the foundations of group representation theory. Question: what if the variables are not commutative? V. Retakh has already obtained results in the case where G is a cyclic group and I will give a description of some of his results. I will show how the study of the operation of right division (which gives a non-associative structure) can put a group matrix in a simplified form. I will also explain how a family of Gelfand pairs arises from a more general look at how group characters arose. I will also mention some of the many open questions arising from the work.
