Logging In
The login procedure for Mathematics Department computers varies depending on
the type of computer you are using. Most of the faculty/graduate
students offices have Linux machines, while administrative
users have Windows. In the public terminal rooms Hill 601 and Hill 531, there are both Linux and Microsoft
Windows PCs. Typically you will find these computers in one of the following states:
Windows Boot Screen
- Type CTRL+ALT+DEL if it says to in the message window. Now enter the username and password associated with this specific computer. All machines, however, are authenticated through the network. If you do not know the username and password please email help@math.rutgers.edu for more details.
Linux Boot Screen
-
Type in your username (math account), and hit Enter. Now type in your password
(which is not shown on the screen, for security reasons) and hit Enter.
You should then be on the default desktop, which is GNOME. If you want something else, like KDE, you can change it by clicking the "Session" button on the login screen, or by using the Desktop Switching Tool (switchdesk) once you are logged in. There are other choices of windows managers as well. If you are used to working in X-windows, the closest option to that is the window manager TWM.
