The Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute (MTBI), is a summer research experience for undergraduates held at Arizona State University. At MTBI, we prepare undergraduates in math, biology, and related fields for the rigors of graduate school by enabling students to produce student-selected, graduate-level research.

The University of Nebrask’s summer program offers research opportunities in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

During the Nebraska Summer Research Program, students receive first-hand exposure to research and the experience of graduate school. They work closely with faculty mentors and research teams of graduate students and other summer scholars. Students also have opportunities to participate in meaningful social and professional development activities outside of the laboratory.
Our online application makes it easy for students to apply. Priority review begins Monday, February 1 and all applications must be completed by Tuesday, March 1. Students historically underrepresented in graduate education and students from academic institutions where research programs are limited are especially encouraged to apply.

NCI-sponsored Systems Biology and Physical Oncology Undergraduate Summer Research Opportunity

 

The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Cancer Systems Biology Consortium and Physical Sciences in Oncology Network are offering rising Junior and Senior undergraduates with outstanding research potential the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors from NCI-supported institutions for an 8-week summer fellowship. The 2017 summer research program is designed specifically for students to gain experience in the interdisciplinary fields of systems biology and physical oncology. Students who are especially interested in cancer research careers are encouraged to apply. Opportunities are available at 14 research institutions across the United States. Stipend, housing, and travel to and from the host institution are covered by NCI. Additionally, students will convene at the NIH in Bethesda, MD, mid-way through the summer to present their research and network with their peers.

We are Rutgers Biomod, the Biomod team at Rutgers University.  Biomod is an annual undergraduate synthetic biology competition hosted at Harvard University.  Last year, we won gold.  See our work at http://eden.rutgers.edu/~biomod. We are looking for undergrad students interested in doing a synthetic biology project during the summer. UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM at The Mathematical Biosciences Institute

The MBI coordinates a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program, which attracts a highly select and diverse group of 12 undergraduate students from across the country each summer.  The program is “distributed” in the sense that MBI institute partners (IPs) serve as hosts for small groups of program participants.    For summer 2017, the program schedule is as follows:

One-Week introduction (June 5-9, 2017):  A one-week introduction to the summer research experience with tutorials, lab tours, and computer labs on topics in the mathematical biosciences.

REU Program (June 12 - August 4, 2017):  An 8-week mentored research experience at an MBI IP on a topic in mathematical biology.

Capstone Conference (August 7-11, 2017):  A student-centered conference featuring talks and posters by students doing research in mathematical biology, keynote talks by prominent mathematical biologists, a graduate studies recruitment fair, and other special features including a conference dinner and social event.  Note that the Capstone Conference is open to all undergraduate students doing research in the mathematical biosciences, not only to students participating in the MBI REU.

Summer Program in Biostatistics & Computational Biology

at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

Eligibility & Requirements

If you like mathematics and would like to learn how quantitative methods can be applied in the study of human health, consider applying to the Summer Program in Biostatistics & Computational Biology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The program will introduce you to the power and excitement of math applications to public health, medicine, and biology, and provide you experiences that will help inform your future career path.

Summer Program for Undergraduates & Recent Graduates

The Summer Program is an intensive 6-week program, during which qualified participants receive a whirlwind introduction to biostatistics, epidemiology, and public health research. This program is designed to expose undergraduates to the use of quantitative methods for biological, environmental, and medical research. The program also provides advice about graduate school and the application process through GRE preparation, meetings with different departments of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and individualized mentoring by Harvard faculty. Participants take non-credit introductory courses in Biostatistics and Epidemiology and statistical programming languages such as R, and attend a series of topical seminars. The seminars, led by faculty members from various departments at the Harvard School of Public Health, are designed to broaden participant's understanding of the relationship of biostatistics to human health by providing a snapshot of methods developed and applied to real research projects in different fields. Participants also gain research experience through small-group research projects directed by faculty and graduate student mentors. At the end of the program, students present their research to the group and to affiliated faculty. Housing and travel are provided and a living stipend (including meals) of approximately \(1900 is provided for the 6-week program.

Post-Baccalaureate Internship

The 2-3 month internship program is for post-bacs interested in or planning to attend a graduate degree program in biostatistics. Past summer program participants are encouraged to apply. Travel is provided and interns will receive a salary for their participation in the post-baccalaureate program. Interns will participate in collaborative research projects through 1-2 rotations at academic and clinical centers at Harvard. They will attend regular seminars at Harvard and Dana Farber Cancer Institute on biostatistical topics. They will also attend the annual Pipelines Into Biostatistics Symposium in July 2017, and have the option to return the next summer to present their research at our 2018 symposium.

Call for Applications: Summer Graduate Program on Connecting Biological Data with Mathematical Models

Graduate students in math, biology and related fields are encouraged to apply to the 2017 Graduate Summer Program on Connecting Biological Data with Mathematical Models, to be held June 19-23, 2017, at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) at the University of Tennessee–Knoxville.

Providing students with broad high-level training in mathematical biology, the program includes lectures on techniques and modeling using specific data sets, computer activities focusing on learning techniques, and feedback sessions on participants’ research problems. Some techniques to be covered include maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches to inference, parameter estimation, model identifiability, uncertainty and sensitivity analysis

Researchers from the mathematical and biological sciences will be featured speakers, including Ben Bolker (McMaster University); Ariel Cintron-Arias (East Tennessee State University); Marisa Eisenberg (School of Public Health, University of Michigan); Nina Fefferman (University of Tennessee, Knoxville); Simeone Marino (University of Michigan Medical School); and Joseph Tien (The Ohio State University).

Application Deadline: Applications for acceptance to the school received before February 3, 2017 will receive full consideration. 

The registration fee of \)300, which includes on-campus housing and meals, is due upon acceptance. Participants are responsible for their own travel to Knoxville. A very limited amount of travel support is available for those demonstrating need.

We are looking for excellent students, with a variety of different backgrounds, who wish to work at the interface between the biological sciences, the physical sciences, computer sciences and engineering. The graduate program in Mathematical,

Computational and Systems Biology (MCSB) is designed to meet the interdisciplinary training challenges of modern biology and to function in concert with existing departmental programs (Departmental Option) or as an individually tailored program (Interdisciplinary Option) leading to a M.S. or Ph.D.  degree. The interdisciplinary degree option is new. The degree program provides students with both opportunity for rigorous training towards research careers in areas related to systems biology and flexibility through individualized faculty counseling on curricular needs, and access to a diverse group of affiliated faculty and research projects from member departments.  Current member departments include Biomedical Engineering, Biological Chemistry, Computer Science, Developmental and Cell Biology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Mathematics, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Chemistry, and Physics. The program emphasizes in-depth classroom study, interdisciplinary research rotations, and individualized advising. The program is administered by the Center for Complex Biological Systems, a National Institutes of Health National Center of Excellence in Systems Biology. This year's research topics include human emotion modeling, spread of mice and hantavirus, molecular dynamics simulations, organelle movements in plant cells, and development of computer games for teaching biology. Stipend and housing are provided along with some funding for travel.

There will be a lecture series, a research forum at the end of the summer in which fellows will present their work, and opportunities to attend research seminars throughout the summer.

    Research topics: How do colonies of Ants make decisions in uncertain world? Why do epidemics burn out instead of killing everybody? How does the Immune system use limited or deceptive information and destroy invaders and avoid self-destruction? This summer we plan to use equations and algorithms to understand complex biological systems constructed from many simple parts.

    Aims: The aim of this 3-week program is to provide undergraduates with an introduction to the excitement of Mathematical Biology. No prior experience in this field is required. We are targeting rising juniors or seniors.

    Eligibility: US citizen or permanent resident who is currently registered in an accredited undergraduate program.  Travel support, on-campus housing, and stipend funds are available.
